2013 May 28

Danielle Hillis of Popular Grove was one of five students in the of History 462 – Archival Methods class taught by Jenny Barker-Devine, that took part in the collaboration for a new exhibit that is on display at Illinois College on the main level of Schewe Library and in Whipple Hall.

The exhibit highlights campus activities and introduces visitors to several alumni who served including Jacksonville leaders Theodore Rammelkamp and Harvey Scott. The career of Paul Findley, former United States Congressman and Illinois College alum, from a student journalist to a Seabees veteran provides as an in-depth example of the ways World War II defined this generation.

The objects in this exhibition are drawn from the Illinois College Archives and the Paul Findley Collection. For example, you will see

• articles from the campus newspaper on issues including isolationism, Japanese internment camps, and student activities such as homecoming and prom

• Illinois College yearbooks before and after rationing

• a "pin-up" photo of Lucille Gemme Findley published in Newsweek magazine

• a SPAM can celebrating the liberation of Guam
